Intro: You stand in front of two gigantic doors, gazing up at it and nervously awaiting it to open. This is your first year at this school after receiving a letter by owl that you have been accepted to this school. You don’t really know what to expect and neither do the other kids who are standing around you. Strangely, there is a mix of species. Trolls and humans, it seems. The sorting ceremony passes rather quickly and luckily for you, your nerves start to calm down as you walk to sit down at the house table you had been assigned to by the Sorting Hat. You receive a few pats on the back and people are clapping as you take a seat, looking up at the table where the headmistress is seated and who will soon be making a very important speech. _________________ Cronus was sat in the Great Hall, looking particularly bored, but even so he was still excited in a way. Like him, the rest of the students were eagerly awaiting the new first years that would walk through those doors in only a matter of minutes. He wondered what kind of fresh meat, or rather people actually, would be joining them this year. He glanced around to the other tables which were littered with both kids and humans alike. He never really cared what species or in which house he or she was sorted into, everyone deserves a fair chance with him right? Finally, the doors opened and young kids streamed in. Cronus instantly perked up, sitting up straight to get a good view of them.

Rose had planned ahead for the wait this year, as always, and brought out a novel to read at the table. The wait for the first years seemed longer every year to her, and she had learned how to sneak in books to the hall during her second year. Of course, the teachers most likely noticed, but they didn't seem to care enough to take the book away from her. In the meantime, she could read her novel and observe her peers during the spare time. She occasionally made small talk with her housemates of Ravenclaw, but for the most part paid attention to her surroundings. Finally, the doors of the Great Hall opened, and in came the year's new students. Rose glanced over them, internally making guesses as to who might end up in which house as they walked by. She didn't even mind if she unnerved them a little. In fact, it was always entertaining to see how they reacted to her.

Dirk sat closely to the front of the Slytherin table, along with the fifth and seventh year prefects. He tapped his finger against the table in a slow rhythm, looking down the hall towards the large doors, awaiting the first years. He listened to the idle conversation of the others around him, occasionally looking to the other Slytherins that sat near him. They were his 'friends', but speaking truthfully, they were his cronies. If Dirk wanted something done and didn't want his hands dirty, they did it for him; but of course, no one knew it was him. Dirk was a perfect student. The male intertwined his fingers, watching the children as they walked in down the center aisle. Some of them would make wonderful Slytherins in their time. He waited patiently for the ceremony of sorting the newcomers to start.

Vriska chuckled and slid in beside Cronus at the Slytherin table. "Y'know, I swear they get smaller every year," she said, nodding her head at the nervous-looking first years being ushered into the Great Hall. Her goblet made a distinct clanking noise as she set it down at her newly-claimed seat, the pumpkin juice nearly tipping over the brim. Another year was starting, at last, and the usual first night excitement (or terror, depending on who you asked) was buzzing around the room. She shoved up the sleeves of her new robes and leaned forward onto her elbows, only to catch a glimpse of his intense expression. The sight made her snort in laughter and punch him lightly on the arm. "I think they're a bit young for you. Just saying." As obnoxiously as possible, she took a sip from her drink and grinned at him.

Sollux looked at the first years. He would normally just be an asshole and try to scare them but he decided not to this year. He was just near the ravenclaw table, hovering around looking to see what everyone was doing. Everyone was by now used to his presence. He stopped when he came across rose and looked over her shoulder at what she was reading. "What's that book called?" He asked reading the line at the top of the page. He looked over to the first years, wondering who would be sorted into what house. He also wondered how many of the first years he would find outside of the door to the common room tomorrow. He really found it funny how many students end up waiting for someone to get the right answer to the riddle. He realized he was staring off into space and snapped back into focus.

Cronus flashed Vriska a sharky grin as she took a seat next to him, only sparing her a quick glance before shifting his gaze back towards the first years streaming in, already searching out people with potential. "That's because you're getting bigger, kitten." He replied, raising a brow at her, knowing that that comment might just get him potentially socked in his face. "They're not even that young, only about four years younger." He snorts, rolling his eyes, making it sound as if he was rather trying to convince himself about the fact rather than Vriska.

Jade skipped in just before the first years, notoriously late as she had almost gotten into a fist fight with a 7th year. Sliding into her seat at the head of the table with the other prefects. Shooting Rose a wave she stretched in her recently patched robes. There was no use in her opinion of buying new robes when they were just going to get torn up in the greenhouses or a scuffle on the school grounds. Watching the cute little first years she let her wand wave, small blue sparkles jetted out as she floated her a goblet. Sipping from the pumpkin juice she realized she'd have to go to prefect meetings with mr. asshole himself, Dirk Strider. The guy was just a creep and annoyed the free spirited girl with his snooty better-than-thou attitude. Maybe this year he'd get the broomstick out of his ass.

"Ding, ding, ding! There go the bells of desperation! Do you hear them, Cronus?" Vriska tittered, drumming her robotic fingers rhythmically against the hard wood of the table. "Honestly, if I were you, I would just accept that I'm creepy and unwanted, and move on with my life. Really! It would probably be better for you than trying to work up the courage to hit on an eleven-year-old in a kitty hat," she said, gesturing at one particularly small and innocent-looking first year girl. She knew her opinion was probably not desired in the situation. She knew, but she didn't care. As far as she was concerned, she was bestowing great wisdom upon his poor, misguided soul. Either way, it was fun for her. This was going to be a good year. She could already tell.

John Egbert laughed along with his friends at the Hufflepuff table, stuffing his mouth with the huge array of foods that lined the tables. He learns how his friends have spent their summer vacations, and describes his own adventures with his father in their summer vacation spent in Paris. He, though eager to show off his exciting summer vacation, often finds his mind wandering to the sights surrounding the Great Hall. When seeing the first years file in, afraid and in wonder, he remembers that wondrous time when he was a first year, and everything was new. It was about making discoveries about the world, and finding out everything about the (honestly) magical lives they lead. It was boring to say the least now. He'd done it before, and it was hard to see the great exposed night sky and floating candles without running through spells in his mind that would make it all possible. It was almost saddening to see the new first years flood in, so innocent and full of hope, to only imagine that in but a few years, they would end up like him.

Rose glanced up from her book when Jade entered the hall, returning the prefect's wave with a small one of her own and a small smile. Jade was always friendly towards her, even with Rose's antisocial tendencies. She was going to return to reading her book when Sollux's question distracted her from it yet again. "It's The End. Just some light reading to tide me over until the Sorting Hat is put to use." Light reading, of course, was relative, although it might be considered that by the ghost, considering he was once a member of Ravenclaw as well. "Do you suppose there will be any interesting new first-years, in your opinion, or do they seem to be a dull group this year?"

Dirk glanced up when Jade walked in late, scoffing and rolling his eyes. How some people were picked for prefects, he didn't know. Obviously they didn't chose very many qualified students, did they? He looked down the table. noticing Vriska and Cronus, too far from the pair to hear their conversation. He looked to some of the people sitting near him as they spoke to him, taking part in their conversation, eating quietly as he listened. He noticed the large doors closing as the last of the first years were herded inside, and everyone waited for the speech and sorting ceremony to begin. As the Sorting went on, Dirk only glanced up when a Slytherin was called out, clapping along with the rest of his table. Some of these kids looked promising.

The Signless practically beamed from his table, watching the new years flood in. This was always his favorite part of the year; the very start. Nothing beat the looks on the faces of the new students as they entered the Hall; looks of wonder, looks of excitement, eager to learn, learn from HIM, of all people! It was wonderful. He hands out a bit of pleasant chatter to his fellow teachers, remarking on this student or that, but spent the bulk of his time just observing the tables and the people there. His pleasant smile widens as he beholds his own table, watching the Hufflepuffs laugh. "A promising crop this year, I think!" He said that every year, but he always meant it.

He looked at Rose's book."Interesting." He looked back at the kids again and sighed. "Well so far none of them have done anything worth noting as interesting but I wouldn't say they're a dull group." He saw that one of the first years had noticed Sollux and Rose and was now staring at them. He seemed a bit freaked out. "Well he sure didn't get too distracted by all the excitement to forget that there where other people here."

Rose nodded absentmindedly, watching the first years as they continued to be sorted into their houses and clapping when it was appropriate for her as a member of Ravenclaw. Glancing to follow Sollux's gaze, she found the first year he seemed to be talking about. She did a small analyzation of him and decided he seemed like the type to be a Hufflepuff. She didn't voice her ideas though, and instead waved at the young boy with what she hoped looked like a smile, but most likely ended up looking more like a smirk instead. "It's proof that at least some of them are observant. Wouldn't you say it's a good thing to see in them?"

Jade was excited as she saw all kinds of first years coming to their table, clapping as loud as she could. The job of showing them how to get to the common room was on her but it was up to them to figure out the riddle. That was the true test of a Ravenclaw and she loved it. Looking back at Dirk she fought the urge to stick her tongue out, taking the more mature route for a change. When she looked at Sollux she waved him over, "hey there! How are you doing this year? How was your summer?" The ghost always interested her., never believing his sour disposition.

Equius Zahhak sat rather awkwardly at the Slytherin table. He had tried to eat, drink, do anything to busy himself so as to not feel completely exposed, but kept destroying all of the dishes and utensils that he was given. The heat in the room was overwhelming and he had already begun to perspire, despite only having spent about ten minutes in the Great Hall so far. Was it the heat at all? Or was he just nervous? He turned his head to expose his neck to the air in the hopes of cooling himself down a bit when his eyes rested on a girl a few seats down from him. Vriska, he thought her name was. He had always had a certain, immense feeling for the girl. Now, all that was left was to find out what that feeling was. Who was that boy she was talking to? He decided to forget the matter for now. And there was Nepeta, waiting to be sorted. He remembered the feeling: sitting under that infernal hat, waiting for it to make a decision that would make up the next seven years of his life, trying not to rip it to shreds or let it slide off of his sweaty hair. The hat had been leaning towards Gryffindor when Equius lost his patience and smashed the stool upon which he had been sitting into splinters. That was five years ago and he still regretted not keeping his composure. He looked around the table, wondering if he could possibly make conversation with anyone. He knew there was no point. No one would have any cause to talk to him nor him to anyone else. It was going to be a long night.

Cronus shook his head, chuckling softly as he listened to Vriska, smirking at her and raising an amused eyebrow. it didn't bother him that she was calling him out by being a bit of a desperate fool. He already knew that. Hell, the whole school and even the staff knew that already. No use telling him. "It's not called desperate, babe. It's called giving everyone a fair chance. And I don't have to work up any courage to hit on a kitten in a kitten-hat." He stated, looking quite smug, saying it as if it was already a proven fact. "And I don't hit on first years anyway. They don't got what I'm lookin' for, if you know what I mean." He said, and with his hands motioned the curves of a woman's body, quite certain that Vriska would catch on rather quickly.

Dirk glanced down the table, noticing Equius a few seats down. He also noticed the many broken utensils and plates in front of the troll. Dirk sighed and rolled his eyes, pulling out his wand. "Reparo." He flicked the wand in a triangle, and the plates and utensils returned to their former unharmed state. "Equius." Dirk said in a scolding tone, and also to get the other's attention. "Do try to be more careful in the future. And fix the things you break. Reparo is a first year charm. And obviously, if you continue to break things you touch, you should find a better way to handle objects, like with a levitation spell. Please try not to make a fool of yourself, hm?" He spoke snidely at the troll, putting his wand back into his sleeve and leaning back to sit up straight and pay attention once more to the Slytherins sitting closest to him.

"Yes, sir," muttered Equius. He didn't mean to be so destructive, of course. Everything was simply too breakable. It was a miracle that his wand had managed to remain intact after all these years. It occurred to him that the human Prefect's idea of handling objects was not a terrible one. He removed his wand from the pocket of his cargo pants and, as gently as he could, flicked upwards. The result was a bronze goblet near him hurtling up into the enchanted ceiling and striking it loudly before returning to the table in three pieces. He put his wand away quickly, looking around and hoping that there had been too much of a clamour in the room for anyone to notice. Unfortunately, this event had attracted the attention of quite a few students and teachers. Slumping down in his seat, he retrieved his wand again and successfully repaired the goblet before vowing to refrain from the performance of any more magic that night. He was perspiring even more heavily now. If only everyone would cut to the chase and finish their meal already!

Rose glanced up from her meal and book when a loud noise echoed through the hall. She searched for its source and found it to be caused by a certain sweating Slytherin. Of course. How could it have been any other? She watched him repair the goblet before going back to her readings. This dinner was lasting much longer than ones of the past felt, to Rose, anyway. How long could it really take to sort first-years and have a speech? What Rose wanted at this point was only to get back to the dorms and settle in for the year. This was getting far too tiresome.

John found himself glancing over to other tables. Sure, they were a great house, all nice and friendly, and well, that was a lot of what John was about! But...C'mon. Why not something badass and cool? Where he got to beat up people and be really cool and stuff? He found that many other Huffepuffians had the same mindset as him, and though they had much house spirit, they longed to be placed somewhere more exciting. Even now, he would look towards the commotion that had been built up around the Slytherin Table, the Ravenclaws obviously looking like they were too good and smart to interact, and well, now he was just waiting for some Gryfindor to jump up and stand up for justice or whatever. John had never gotten in a fight at any House Dinner. Two years ago, a fight had broken out when the House Cup winners had been announced. He'd been too young to join in, but...boy, did he want to. A broken glass or whatever it was wasn't something to start a house war, over. He still expected that there would be some sort of large house prank going on later. He looks over to the teachers table, and sure enough, it wasn't the end of the world. He nods over a smiles to Professor S. before another of his friends pulls him down to his seat, where he sighs, and looks towards the metal armed girl at the Slytherin table longingly.

Equius removed a small collection of metal scraps from his pocket. At least, that's what anyone else looking over might call it if they saw it. It was actually the start of a gift for Nepeta. No magic, simply machinery. Just the way he liked it. He also produced a small screwdriver and began to tighten the casing for the main circuit board. The little machine sparked brightly, filling the Great Hall with a blinding light for a moment. He looked around again to see a collection of dirty looks from both his own and the other tables. This was the second time in only fifteen minutes. He placed the equipment away quickly and his eyes, after searching the room for something to busy himself with, rested on Vriska once again. There were so many questions. Was the bionic arm that he had fashioned for her functioning properly? Was she thankful for it in the slightest? Did she even remember his existence? There were far too many inquiries, and no point in asking any of them. Tearing his eyes away from the girl, he returned to focusing on Nepeta. She looked adorable, as usual. Just waiting for her time to be sorted. He made a mental note to discover a better form of communication than Trollian as he was certain that she would not be placed in Slytherin with him.

Vriska cackled, leaning forward to grab a newly-appeared, mysterious hunk of meat and drop it onto her empty plate. "Well, the problem is, you're saying it like that-" she mimicked his hand gesture with an eye roll- "wants you. And you know and I know that's a damned lie. Man! I don't think you could be more of a tool if you tried! Honestly, you're so tactless and moronic. I don't know how anyone puts up with you!" As she said this, she heaped a few equally mysterious sprouts next to her meat, followed by a breadstick, which she popped into her mouth at the end of her little speech. Sneering, she gnawed on the end of the thing. "Oh wait. They don't." Another laugh lit up her dace. Paranoid as ever, she felt as if someone was watching her. Her eyes flicked around the room in search of the culprit, and quickly discovered it to be John Egbert's gaze she had fallen under. That dorky kid from Hufflepuff. He was alright. She winked at him once she was sure he had noticed her notice him staring. Just for kicks. Not because he was kind of adorably clueless or anything.

Terezi was sitting at the far end of the Ravenclaw table and was petting her owl Pyralspite. She had a scalemate under her arm and was rather focused on trying take in all of the scents that were mixing together. Her concentration was broken, however, when a loud crash echoed through the hall. She let out a chuckle when she saw it was Equius who had made the noise in an attempt to fix the goblet. She decided to get up and sit near Sollux and Rose. "Sure is noisy huh?" she grinned her usual toothy grin and squeezed her scalemate. "Wonder when they'll get started."
